What formed due to the Civil War?
The 13th Amendment:
This amendment to the Constitution made slavery illegal. It was added to the Constitution in 1865. This addition caused many to in the south to voice their concerns that with slavery ending, the industry supported by slavery would become ruined. Many states in the north had already passed laws to protect blacks, but they never passed through Congress. This new amendment would become the norm to Americans hundreds of years after it was passed.
The 14th Amendment:
This law was passed in 1868 and was somtimes referred to as the "Great Amendment." This ensured the same rights to African Americans as it did to whites. Anyone born in the United States was considered a citizen and had equal rights. This amendment also kept states from making laws that would hurt the rights of natural Americans such as the Black Code Laws passed earlier. However, even though this law was passed, it did not actual take full effect until years later.
The 15th Amendment:
This amendment protected Blacks' voting rights. States were no longer allowed to keep people from voting based on race, color, or prior slave statuses. The law was added in 1870. After it was accepted to the Constitution, southern states made it more difficult for black people to vote. Some added a poll tax or literacy test before being granted the right to vote. These tactics worked due to poor education levels and low wages. However, some were able to overcome this obstacle and still be able to vote for what they thought was right.
