Effects of Civil War in North Carolina
North Carolina was the largest contributor to the confederate
army with the supply of men. North Carolina’s men made up one-sixth of the
Confederate Army. Even though many died due to wartime or disease, this massive
number was still able to help support the Confederacy.
North Carolina also supplied a few well-known generals to the
Confederacy. Some of these men included Braxton Bragg, Daniel H. Hill, and
Robert F. Hoke. The state was, at this point in time, divided. About 8,000
went to war for the Union while the rest supported the Confederacy.
The Tar Heel state is also known for some of the forts that still
exist today from the Civil War. The Union captured Fort Hatteras and Fort Macon
in 1862. These forts were essential due to the fact that the Union wanted to
protect the Hatteras Port. Even though there were not famous forts in the
mountains, guerilla warfare did take place along the mountain region.
